SARASOTA – Morgan Davidson was sitting backstage at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall Tuesday morning, nervously awaiting the presentation of her portrait of George W. Bush, when she felt a hand on the back of her chair.

It was the former president, joking that he hoped the portrait wouldn’t make him look too much like Alfred E. Neuman, the mascot for MAD magazine.

“Then he went out to speak, and I got invited to go out onstage and present him with the drawing,” said Davidson, a 21-year-old senior in illustration at the Ringling College of Art and Design. She was selected by Ringling faculty to create the portrait for presentation during the Ringling College Library Association’s Town Hall lecture series.
